What is Blogging?

You are presently reading a blog.  What is blogging and why should you use it?  This is a question that I’m sure other teachers wonder as well.  Wish I had an exact answer.

One place you may get some answers is at Support Blogging.  This is a wiki that explains what a blog is and possible ways it can be used in education.  There is also a list of educator blogs located at this site

I believe blogging can be used in the classroom, but you as the teacher must feel comfortable with it.  To get comfortable, start a blog yourself.  Begin by talking about your school day, listing assignments, asking questions to your students that they may respond to.  Do not worry, you can set your blog up in such a fashion that you must approve all comments before they get posted.  There are many examples of student blogs that are an incredible outlet for creativity.

Being a math teacher myself, you may want to look at Puzzling Problems….Looking for an example of a Biology blog?  Glance at Miss Baker’s Blog.  English?  Try  The Secret Life of Bees or Ms. Watson’s English Class

Maybe you can just write a blog about your day to day teaching experiences.  At any rate, do not give up…and if you are reading someone elses blog…leave a comment…no matter how simple or short.  Help encourage your peers.  It always makes you feel good to know someone is reading what you write.  It’s so easy to leave a comment…and encourages the blogger to write more.

Teachers in my own district could start a blog about their Promethean Board experiences or administrators could blog about info from their school for their teachers or possibly parents.  Give it a try.  Check out one of our own district principal’s blog.  What a great tool to spread information.

I’m not a blog expert (as you can tell), but you can easily start your own blog.  Check out the list at Support Blogging.  I use WordPress….but any will do.  Each has their own features.  Use the one you like the best.  If you start a new blog, please let me know.  Leave me a comment with your blog address!  I can’t wait to read what you have to say!
